Commission for the Status of Women Sixty- Second Session (CSW62) from 12-23 March 2018 at the UNHQ, New York

The Honorable Minister Mrs. Chandrani Bandara was in New York from 12- 16 March 2018 for attending the Sixty Second Session of the Commission for the Status of Women being held from March 12-23 at the United Nations Head Quarters. Sri Lanka’s delegations to the CSW this year was headed by Women’s Affairs Minister Mrs. Chandrani Bandara and included Women and Child Affairs Ministry Additional Secretary Mrs. Ashoka Alawatte and a senior officer from the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the UN in New York. The priority theme for this year’s CSW was “Challenges and Opportunities in achieving Gender equality and the empowerment of rural women and girls.
The Minister, delivering Sri Lanka’s country statement at the 62nd Commission for the Status of Women on March13, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, said that “the government of Sri Lanka recognizes Gender equality and empowerment as a priority area, which issues are addressed through the Constitution and by meeting treaty obligations. As part of her official programme, Minister Mrs. Chandrani Bandara also delivered the keynote speech at a side event on addressing the overall situation of rural women in Sri Lanka and in Asia, GOSL’s effective policies and strategies under the 2030 agenda, and challenges and opportunities faced by rural women entrepreneurs. In addition, the Honorable Minister participated in several side events which took place at the UNHQ, in New York. [](http://)
